Scientific Symposium to Examine Ocean Acidification

Second Symposium on The Ocean in a High-CO2 World August 2008: The Second Symposium on the Ocean in a High-CO2 World, co-organized by the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), is scheduled to take place from 6-9 October 2008 in Monaco.

The event aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum to assess what is known about ocean acidification - the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth’s oceans, caused by their uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide from the atmosphere - and to identify priorities for future research. The first three days of the Symposium will be dedicated to scientific aspects of oceans acidification, while the last day will summarize the scientific findings, examine the basic economics of ocean acidification and address its consequences for policy-makers.
