World Food Programme (WFP) Adopts New Strategic Plan to Address Food Crisis

13 June 2008: The WFP Executive Board has adopted a new four-year strategic plan to address hunger needs arising from recent food price increases and shortages, as well as to fight hunger more strategically.

“This strategic plan marks a revolution in food aid that supports local markets in breaking the cycle of hunger,” said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran. The plan provides for a so called “80-80-80” solution: 80 percent of WFP food aid will be spent locally, 80 percent of ground transport will be procured in the developing world, and 80 percent of WFP staff will be hired locally. The strategic goals of the plan include measures to support and strengthen resiliency of communities to shocks, including adaptation to climate change, such as early warning tools to anticipate impacts from changing climate and to prepare for shocks through disaster.
